What’s Cool on Kickstarter

There’s many interesting items to be found on Kickstarter, but these are the coolest ones this week.

Elvenroot Collapsible Dice Tower and Dice Case
These dice boxes are amazing. I love that they look a d20, and the engraving is beautiful. A giant d20 on your desk with all your favorite dice seems like the perfect storage mechanism. The Dice towers look beautiful as well, even when collapsed. If you want some beautiful wood pieces in your collection, check these out.

“The Elvenroot Dice Case is itself a perfectly handcrafted 20 sided die. Made of solid White Oak, this dice box measures 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) in diameter with a volume large enough to hold several sets of dice. The rare earth magnets hold the lid securely in place while allowing easy access to the dice inside.

The Elvenroot Dice Tower is a truly portable handcrafted hardwood Dice Tower. Made from solid domestic and exotic hardwoods the tower looks amazing on the gaming table, but it really separates itself from other dice towers in its portability and ease of use. Collapsed, the Dice tower is a small 6 inch x 6 inch square that is 2 inches tall (15.25 cm x 15.25 cm x 5 cm), making it convenient to carry. Unlike other portable towers however the Elvenroot tower not only disassembles in seconds, it also goes together in seconds. If you enjoy assembling 3D puzzles thats great, I just don’t think you should have to at the gaming table.”

Age of Cthulhu 9: The Lost Expedition
Since hard copies of 7e Call of Cthulhu are finally arriving, it’s the perfect time to get your hands on a new 7e adventure, that includes my favorite mythos creature, the Shoggoth! The adventure is your classic 1920’s Call of Cthulhu adventure, but if the art is any indication, you’re going to get dinosaurs as well!

“Age of Cthulhu is an officially licensed line of adventure modules published by Goodman Games for Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu role playing game. Set around the globe and torn from the pages of the hidden history of the world, Age of Cthulhu adventures bring new secrets and mind-bending horrors to your 1920s Call of Cthulhu game. Each adventure comes with copious player handouts, detailed maps, and pre-generated investigators ready to risk their lives and their sanity to confront the horrors of an uncaring universe.

The adventure begins in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia, but eventually leads outside of our dimension into the strange realm known as the Great White Space, and eventually to The Lost World, a terrifying setting where the investigators encounter dinosaurs with alien traits. To discover what happened to the lost expedition, they must face mundane (but deadly) threats, like ravaging bandits, fierce wild animals, and the machinations of the ruthless Dr. Samuel Norris, as well as threats from beyond the ken of man.”

FAITH: A Garden in Hell
We talked to the folks at Burning Games during their initial FAITH kickstarter, and now they’re releasing an expansion! This adds a campaign as well as new equipment and options to your original game. I still haven’t had the opportunity to try FAITH out from the last go around, but I love that you’re ready to go when you get this kit with a full game.

“A Garden in Hell gives you a complete pick-up-and-play campaign containing everything you need to roleplay in the Faith Universe right out of the box.

Veterans from our previous Kickstarter will find an overhauled ruleset, new gear and equipment cards, a player deck with alternate art in the nature suit, and most importantly, a 64 page-long campaign that will take you to uncharted territory, into the ravager’s den.

Faith: A Garden in Hell is a campaign for 2-5 players and 7-10 sessions. Everything needed to play the game is included in the box. The fragile truce between the Iz’kal and the Corvo had been compromised by a series of murderous attacks on far away settlements. Mutually Assured Destruction was days away as both species laid blame on each other… when the Battle of Izuan Tai shook the groundwork of the known Universe. It was the first big blow the legendary species of the Ravager would deliver to civilisation, but it wouldn’t be the last. A new menace had awoken from a long sleep.”

OrcaCon 2017
Now that things in my life are starting to settle down, Aser and I are starting to eye all the gaming conventions we can go to. OrcaCon is on our side of the country (#TheBestCoast) and is a great place to meet tons of game creators and like minded individuals. And their mission for the next convention is diversity and accessibility, which are things we really love here at TRF. If you’re free next January, be sure to check out OrcaCon!

“These are the words which opened our very first Kickstarter and our convention. Our Mission Statement has been solid ever since the inception of OrcaCon back in 2014. Now, we continue on our mission, with the launch of OrcaCon 2.0. We decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign for our second OrcaCon, so we can cover the hotel space rental, which is $20,000. OrcaCon 2016 was a huge success, with 703 people showing up to play games and enjoy the show. Last year’s Kickstarter made it easy for us to focus on quality guests, content, and perks for our attendees. We’re coming back with another Kickstarter Project so our Year 2 can be even more successful with MORE space for games, panels/workshops, tournaments. We will also have a Quiet Room, a special Suite for our Kickstarter Reward games, and much much more!”

Plot Twist: A Storytelling Card Game
This looks like a super fun game in the Apples to Apples mold, but one that requires actual creativity to do well at. On your turn you get a trope card and use as many plot cards in your hand as you can to tell a story. The best stories each round win points from the other players. I love how silly many of the plot cards are, and I think this game could lead to a lots of laughter with your friends.

“Plot Twist is a storytelling card game for four to six players. All players are Storytellers and stitch together Plot Cards, combined with a little imagination, to tell short stories prompted by Trope Cards. Plot Cards contain tired clichés, action beats, random events, and hilarious happenings. Storytellers stitch together as many Plot Cards as they need to tell their version of the selected Trope Card prompt, making up the events between cards as they go. Stories can be simple tales, outrageous romps, or outright-insane cartoons – as long as you can justify the Plot Cards you use in your story, you can use them however you’d like!

After all Storytellers have told their stories for the round, they cast votes for their favorite stories of the round. Votes in Plot Twist are weighted – you get three Story Point Cards to use each round and you can give them out however you want. Feel free to spread your votes around to multiple Storytellers, or give all three to your favorite story!”
