What’s Cool on Kickstarter

There’s many interesting items to be found on Kickstarter, but these are the coolest ones this week.

Noir World
Noir World is an Apocalypse World game that allows you to play your own Noir game. Which sounds amazing. A femme fatale seems like she definitely would have a place in a game PbtA. You’re not limited in playing in the 1920’s, it’s extensible to near future settings as well with 10 decades available. There are 20 roles you can play, which is great for having lots of options. I’m interested to see how this game will work with no GM, but I definitely want to give it a try.

“Noir World is film noir as powered by the Apocalypse. Around your table you’ll choose from 20 Roles, create relationships between them, build a City, and maybe solve a Crime, all while trying to create the best Movie possible.

It’s powered by the Apocalypse, the same mechanics found in Apocalypse World, Dungeon World, Headspace, and Monsterhearts, but it’s different – there’s no set single person acting as a GM. Here, everyone will have a chance to be the Director, everyone is the GM.”

Wooden Insults
I love Dog Might Game’s projects, and though this one seems a little less useful then some of the storage options. If you have ever wanted to send someone a custom wood engraving of an insult of your choice, leaving them with a mess of sawdust, now is your chance. They even have a vault of insults if you can’t some up with your own, I like “Your Life is a Critical Fail.” This project seems like a lot of fun, and I would probably hang them on my wall if I had one.

“Imagine the joy in opening a personalized Wooden Insult that’s been shipped directly to your door from Dog Might Games. The custom Insult engraving, “Sawdust Surprise” packaging, and mass-produced cheap envelope all scream attention to detail and provide the memory of a lifetime. Tears of joy will fall as you vacuum the sawdust off of the floor and apply ointment to the super burn you just received.

Now is your opportunity to give this experience to your friends, family, or most hated rival.

Our shop of fine craftsman will create a beautiful, personalized keepsake for the recipient of your choice. You can choose an existing insult from our designer curated Vault of Insults or supply your own insult for a more personal touch. Every Wooden Insult comes with your choice of font and decorative border ensuring that your affront will be presented according to your derision aesthetic.”

Bloodlines and Black Magic
I’ve never tried any sort of modern setting for Pathfinder, but I really like the idea of this modern investigative horror world that Bloodlines & Black Magic introduces. Urban Fantasy is one of my favorite settings, and introducing horror and conspiracies to that makes it just that much better. I like that they are working hard to pull in a lot of current mythology into their world and if I were going to play Pathfinder again this is a setting I would want to play in.

“Bloodlines & Black Magic is a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game compatible supernatural campaign setting that takes place in our modern world. Bloodlines & Black Magic pits rich political elites, desperate cultists, supernatural horrors, celestial powers, secret magical orders, Göetic spirits, and ancient bloodlines in a deadly war against one another over a reality that nearly all of humanity can neither see nor comprehend.”

Cooking with Dice
Cooking and RPG’s are two of my favorite things, and this cookbook lets you bring dice rolling into the kitchen. There are a few simple recipes, and then you get to roll to see what sort of ingredients are going to go into your food. There’s no guarantee you won’t end up with something weird, but you might find something great too!

“Cooking with Dice combines the best parts of an RPG with real-life cooking. You’re presented with a set of character sheets, a scenario, a selection of formulas, roll tables, and a scoring system that allows you to level up your characters. You can play solo, cooperatively, or competitively with friends and family.”

Sly Flourish’s Fantastic Adventures
Sly Flourish knows what he’s talking about with D&D, and this set of adventures looks really promising. The adventures are all stand alone, but they also tie into Sly Flourish’s Fantastic Locations. If you’re looking for something easy to run your players through, this set of adventures would be perfect.

“Sly Flourish’s Fantastic Adventures will contain ten short adventures for the fifth edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game, designed for characters of 2nd to 5th level. We’ve designed each of these adventures so GMs can drop them into any fantasy campaign world. Whether you run a homebrew setting or a published game world, these adventures will fit in as either main adventure hooks or side quests to be undertaken by the characters in your game.

Each adventure includes a map of the adventure location and a special presentation format designed to make it as easy as possible for game masters to pick up this book, choose an adventure, and get started playing. Whether you’re running a single-session adventure for a few friends or want to drop a short adventure into the middle of your longer campaign, Fantastic Adventures has you covered.”

The Sword, The Crown, and the Unspeakable Power
Another game Powered by the Apocalypse, The Sword, The Crown, and the Unspeakable Power is a dark fantasy game about intrigue. I enjoy a lot of the inspiration they cite, and the AW system seems like a really good one for telling a story of intrigue like this. The roles that are available to play are pretty diverse, while still intrigue-y. Intrigue is a hard thing to pull of in a game, and I’m really interested in seeing how SCUP is able to pull it off!

“The Sword, The Crown, and The Unspeakable Power (SCUP) is a tabletop roleplaying game from Wheel Tree Press designed by Todd Nicholas and Thomas J. Using the Powered by the Apocalypse system, SCUP focuses on power, intrigue, and shifting alliances in a dark fantasy setting. Inspired by political science-fiction and fantasy such as A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, The First Law by Joe Abercrombie, Imperial Radch by Ann Leckie, and the TV show Vikings, SCUP provides players with an immersive role-playing experience, where they can get their hands dirty in the bloody machinations of power.”
