What’s Cool on Kickstarter

There’s many interesting items to be found on Kickstarter, but these are the coolest ones this week.

Worlds of the Cypher System
Monte Cook Games have been teasing this kickstarter for a while, and I couldn’t be happier to see it this morning. The Cypher System is the only major book MCG didn’t Kickstart, but now we have the chance to pledge for world settings for the game. This will get us at minimum three settings books, all of which sounds like amazing places to set your game. The settings include modern people heading back in time to the dinosaurs, a fantasy setting where you can find your own divine spark, and super power horror setting, which just sounds amazing.

“Awaken your divine spark, claim a dominion, and become a god in a fantasy world in which the heavens smashed upon the Earth like a vengeful star.

Or find yourself trapped in the dark and dangerous world of the Cretaceous Period. First you’ll have to figure out how to survive using the tech you brought from the future—modern weapons, advanced science, and bioengineered dinosaurs. Then you can worry about the asteroid that history says wipes out most life on earth.

Or drift to the edge of insanity. They’ll say you’re dangerous. Insane. That you suffer from Dissociative Mask Disorder. Your parents and the doctors and the press and the military—they can’t believe what’s happening. They can’t believe what you can do. And they wouldn’t believe the price you pay.

Three exciting, 192-page campaign settings from the creative minds at Monte Cook Games! The Cypher System is an incredible tabletop roleplaying game engine that delivers all the narrative power and ease of play of Numenera to any campaign you want to run. The content in this Kickstarter will provide at least two full years of awesome Cypher System campaigns—plus the tools and content to build your own incredible games—all straight from the minds of the legendary Monte Cook Games creative team. We’re brewing some awesome books, and if this campaign does well, we’d add more cool stuff, like expanded rules and maybe even some fiction.”

HP Lovecraft Film Festival and CthulhuCon
I love horror movies, and love the idea of a Lovecraft-themed film Festival. This year you can head to San Pedro, CA and meet up with a bunch of cool, like-minded people and enjoy the horror.

“The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® & CthulhuCon™-San Pedro returns for the seventh year at the exquisite art deco Warner Grand Theatre in historic San Pedro on April 29th, 30th, and May 1st. Join us for three days of movies, music, games, art, authors, vendors, and so much more!

We’re going big this year (much like ol’ Wilbur Whateley himself) and attempting all new, original programming in addition to some of the finest Lovecraftian films the world has to offer. But crafting such a unique experience takes some effort, so please excuse the mess and mind the gaps as we set this event up. We will present key info as soon as we can, but know that it will be just as spectacularly tentacular this year as it has in the past (even better!)

Our theme this year: The Dunwich Horror”

Dice Citadels
These are a really cool way to carry your dice around, especiallly if you’re playing in a fantasy setting that involves a lot of towers.

“These twist-top towers hold one complete set of RPG dice, with space for an extra d10 so you can get your percentage on. Dice Citadels are craft-batch 3D-printed in biodegradable plastic and digitally sculpted using only fair-trade polygons hand-plucked from the slithiest of toves. Whenever possible we use sustainably-sourced algorithms during production. These towers are roughly the size of a banana, sturdy enough to toss into a haversack ahead of a weekend’s gaming, and are printed in either a solid color or Glow in the Dark. ”

AMP: Year 3
Third Eye Games is an amazing company, and we’re so excited to see Eloy release another expansion for AMP. It includes new affiliations and player options, as well as new powers and suits. If you love superhero games you should check it out.

“AMP: Year One is Third Eye Games modern supers RPG which gives a glimpse at what would happen if regular people started to develop superpowers in 2015! The AMPs, or people with accelerated mutant potential, discovered their power and struggled with what to do with their newfound abilities. The corebook covered over 54 different powers and laid out a brand new way to look at superhero RPGs. In AMP: Year One, there are no heroes… there are no villains… there are only hard choices!

Last year came AMP: Year Two, the award-winning expansion for AMP: Year One that expanded on the world, introduced new player options and added plenty of new powers to choose from, like Gadgeteering or Glass manipulation. It also opened the world up beyond just the US, explaining what happens when AMPs begin appearing in other countries.

Now comes AMP: Year Three, the next book in the AMP gameline! It will further expand the information we know about the setting and the usable game material for everyone’s stories.”

Escape Room in a Box
I really like the idea of Escape Rooms, but I don’t live anywhere near the big cities they’re set up in to try one out. But now you can work together with your friends at home and try an Escape Room in a Box. This theme follows one of my favorites, The Werewolf Experiment.

“For game enthusiasts who are looking to host an unforgettable night of fun, ESCAPE ROOM IN A BOX is a 60-90 minute cooperative game where 2-6 players solve puzzles, crack codes, and find hidden clues in order to find an antidote to thwart a mad scientist’s plot to turn them into werewolves.

ESCAPE ROOM IN A BOX is an experience as much as a game. It’s a chance to host an unforgettable night of fun with your friends as you race against the clock to twist your brain around puzzling problems and cunning clues. We can’t tell you too much without ruining the surprise, but these are not just pen and paper puzzles. There are locked boxes! Keys and codes that must be found! Feats of dexterity, quests for knowledge and mind-bending brain teasers that must be accomplished.”
